>> breaking news, three people are dead in an overnight crash involving an ambulance. we are live with dails. >> good morning, i'm joe krebs. >> and i'm eun yang. welcome to "news 4 today" for this thursday, september 16th, 2010. we want to take a live look outside right now. it is 65 degrees. a cool, refreshing morning. another autumn day. tom says clouds are moving in. good morning to you, tom. >> well, to help out our parched region with the drought ongoing we have a chance for much-needed rain. that is probably not going to be arriving until this evening, after sunset. between nownd then, another dry day. and right now around our region the temperatures are showing a mild start compared to the last couple oforning when it's been rather chilly. right ow it's generally in the low 60s in the suburbs and rural areas. upper 60s in washington and near the waters. out in the mountains, low 50s in many locations. eastn shore in the low 60s. and as we take a look at the view from space, we can show that on graphic 22, the view

from space is showing some ouds moving in from the north and west, and there are some showers beginning to move in there. here's the four-day tlook on graphic 22. we ha afternoon highs climbing to the mid 80s. and then overnight tonight is whene could pass that few passing showers, and then maybe some thunder, too. that wouldn't be done until after sunset. friday looks like some sunshine back withighs in the low 80s. saturday mostly sunny, l 80s again and a pleasant sunday as well. great weather for all of the games over the weekend and for outdoor recreaon, as well. now let's check traffic. >> pretty quiet morning as we get under way around town. nothing too much to fear. most of the major roadways seem to be doing pretty well. along i-270 the capital beltway south to town over at the wilson bridge we're okay. for those of you coming out of clarksburg, good news, lanes re open all the way on down. joe, eun? >> thank you, jerry. >> we begin with breaking news.

three people are dead after eir suv collided with an ambulance in prince george's county. inveigators say the suv was headed the wrong way down marlboro heights when the crash happened. megan mcgrath is live on the scene now with the latest. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. this was a violent crash. take a look behind me here. you can see the ambulance that was struck and it's just down the road a ttle bit. you can see the suv that is now up on its roof, flipped upside down here this happened a little bit afr midnight. police say the ambulance had just left the firehouse on a call. they were headed down marlboro pike when all of a sudden an suv crossed the center line and was actually poised totrike the ambulance head-on. now the driver of the ambulance swerved to try to get out of the way, the suv struck the side of the ambulance. it missed th cab where the two paramedics were seated but it did rip open the patient compartment of the ambulance.

the suv then continued down marlboro pike for a short distance, hit a brick wall, hit a utility pole and then flipped over onto its roof. three people inside the suv were killed in this crash. we're told that the paramedics, they were transported to the hospital as a precaution but they are expected to be okay. but a violent collision here on marlboro pike. the road in the 5600 block is closed. not sure how long that's going to be the case but i could impact rush hour this morning. investigators still documenting this crash, trying to piece together exactly what happened. should mention that all of this was captured on video. there was a mounted camera on the dash board of the ambulance, and so they do have video of this collision. the ambulance was on its way to a call, had just left the fire house. they had their lights andirens on at the time this all occurred. >> just a horrible accident. megan, thanks so much. all eyes in the district are looking forward to the future now that voters have chosen

new mayor. vincent gray and current mayor adrian fenty are both expected to be at a democratic unity breakfast this morning. many are wondering whether the change in powe will bring a change in the schools chancellor position. news 4's elaine reyes joins us live from the newsroom. she has more on this. good morning, elai. >> good morning, joe. neither side is saying much. vincent gray wants to get past the november general election before making any personnel decisions. and schools chancello michelle rhee is continuing to make her decision based on the current school year. education was a major campaign issue for both gray and fenty. the mayor's choice as chancellor and the reform of the school system didn go over very well with much of the electorate. so the big question asked during all the post-election news conferences yesterday, will michelle rhee stay or go? she called the electio results a significant change in direction, but vowed to work with both chairman gray and fenty.

>> we'renot going to be turning back any clocks on school reform, we're going to be moving forward. >> the demand that more politicians stand up and you know, are willing to make the hard decisions likedrian fenty has done over the last 3 1/2 years. >> now registered schools are featured in a new documentary on school reform called waiting for superman. rhee is one of several people interviewed in that movie. both fenty and rhee say their management decisions played a huge impact on those primary results. joe, back to you. >> elaine reyes reporting live from the newsroom. thanks very much. four fbi agents are accused ofaking steroids and lying about it. accding to arrest affidavits, each filled prescriptions for steroids and human growth hormones and covered up the fact that they used them. the fbi used the medica forms to assess their fitness for duty. in response the fbi said quote, employees must be held to the highest standards of ethical

conduct. the agents cannot use their weapons while the investigation proceeds. looks like could be a weekend of dangerous rip currents alone the east coast thanks to hurricane igor. that category 4 storm is far out to see, but large swells and high surf are expectedo affect the virgin islands, the baham and parts of the east coast by later today. hurricane julia, another category 3 storm, is also churningar out fm land, out in the atlantic. and meanwhile tropical storm karl has pushed across mexico's yucatan peninsula, and lashing beach resorts there. mexico's government has now issued a hurricane watch for its central coast. the brok oil well in the gulf of mexico m be fixed for good by the start of next week. former coast guard admiral thad allen says the work on the relief well should be finished tonight. after that work will start on the bottom kill. that involves pumping thick mud and cement into the well and could be completed this weekend.

their suv collided with an ambulance in prince george's county. investigators say the suv was headed the wrong way down marlboro pike in district heights when it side-swiped the ambulance. all three men in the suv were killed. two ambulance workers were taken to the hospital, butre expected to be okay. prince george's county police say they're investigating a string of robberies in the college park area. officers have raesed one man and they're now searching for two others. police say that 19-year-old churner was one person who robbed a student near the university omaryland campus on august 8th. he remains in custody this morning. and the damaged oil well in the gulf of mexico could be fixed for good within days. the coast guard says a relief well should be finished tonight. work on the so-called bottom kill would begin after that and could be completed this weekend. a former high school football sta will spend the next three decades in prison. he was convicted of murder in a scheme that prosecutors say started on an adult chat line.

news 4's jackie bensen has more. >> reporter: these grainy security images show the prelude to a cold blooded murder. prosecutors claimhe person in the lighter gray coat is a young man named tommy west. they say he was using a cell phone belonging to his cousin, also seen here, to lure a man to his death in a dark, lonely spot behind a landover middle school. other cameras show the same two men leaving the area a short time later. investigators learned suspect and victim had met on an adult phone chat line. they wouldn't say which one. >> ostensibly the arrangement was for some kind of, apparently sexual liaison to take place in the victim's vehicle. >> reporter: investigators learned that tommy west, just 19 at the time, had posted a series of pictures online, which showed him holding a gun, semiautomatic with an extended clip. it was laterdetermined to have been the weapon used to shoot the victim behinthe school. 40-year-old george white jr. of

fort washington, who was also robbed. >> ran bk, pulled back. >> reporter: during the trial, defense council argued that whack's conduct was out of character. that he was a talented athlete, a football standout, someone with a future. the judge noted whack's criminal history and sentenced him to the maximum penalty, 30 years in prison. >> wh you kill somebody, i think athletics become secondary from the standpoint of what's going to happen to you for the rest of your life. he clearly killed this man in cold blood, left him for dead and to his cell phone so he couldn't even call 911 to get help. >> reporter: in april a popular d.c. school pncipal was murdered by suspects police say he met on a phone chat line. jackie bensen, "news 4 today." the man who held police at bay in a nine-hour standoff in prince george's county is in critical condition this morning. the standoff started late tuesday night on richboro road in capital heights, and ended yesterday morning when the suspect shot himself.

at one point, eight people were held hostage. all of them are okay. one of the hostages told ne 4 that the gunman was upset over a breakup with his girlfriend. heads up if you take the diet drug meridia. an advisory panel to the fda is trying to get it pulled from the market, or at least restricted. the group warns that the risks of meridia outweigh the benefits. in a study of 9,000 people who took it, patients lost an average of 5 to 8 pounds but experienced a 16% increase in het attacks and strokes. for eight pounds of weight loss, that's quite a high risk to take. >> i underand that people have coerns about the health risks. but at the same time, there are lots of drugs that people have concerns about. >> the fdas now considering an exerimental weight loss drug that has fewer side effects in clinical trials and patients lost an average of 17 pounds a year.

the dulles metrorail project could end up costing $1.3 billion more than originally expected. the silver line would eventually extend from falls church to dulles airport in loudoun couny. phase one, which is already 20% complete, will cost around $2.75 billion.

now according to the metropolitan washington airport authority it looks like phase two will cost just as much. it's now considering building the stopt dulles airport above groundather than underground and that could save $640 million. a new cell phone app makes it impossible to text while driving. it shuts down all texting and e-mails once you drive more than ten miles per hour. the app won't let you get any incoming messagesr send any out. a built-in gps tracks your speed and tells the app when to shut down the cell phone. once you stop driving, the phone restores all missed messages, though. youdrive slowly and do some damage to the parking lot or a neighborhood. so be careful. >> it's now 5:26. 66 degrees. coming up in the next half hour we have the lateston the cleanup of a terrible accident ovnight involving an ambulance. three people are dead.

after vincent gray's win over mayor adrian fenty. what this means for chancellor michelle rhee. i'm eun yang. >> i'm joe krebs. on this thursday, the 16th day of september, 2010. let's take a live look outside. some clouds above us, but a beautiful day otherwise. 66 degrees right now. and it's going to get warm, i think, tom, is that coect? >> yeah, a pleasant morning now. but it will warm into the mid 80s by midafternoon which is seven or eight degrees above the average for this time of the year. not unusual for mid-september. may be the last time we'll see that warm a temperature for another number of days as we get into the weekend. a bit of a cooling trend. right now we have considerable cloudiness around. it's in the low 60s in much of the region to upp 60s in washington and near the bay. highs will be climbing out of the 50s, in the mountains into the 70s. mid 80s elsewhere. and some increasing clouds coming in from the midwest as an area of low pressure passes to

deputies in virginia are warning people who use onine dating sites this morning after they say a woman was sexually assaulted by a man she met online. according to the loudoun county sheriff's office, 34-year-old john evans met the 37-year-old victim on the site back in june. in july she went to his home where officials say he held her against her will, and sexually assaulted her. sheriff's investigators are now concerned this woman was not evans' first victim. >> a situation like this, it's the same as someone who's been scammed. they don't want the embarrassment of someone knowing they've been scammed so they don't say anything. that's how these perpetrators continue to get by with their crimes. they don't come forward. if anybody is familiar with this person we'd certainly like to hear from them. >> eharmony released a statement saying it's, quote, deeply saddened to hr about this terrible incident. the website also said it immediately closed evans' account and notified all of his matches not to communicate with him. the company that hires metro access drivers is taking a

closer look at how those drivers are traed. mv transportation has authorized an independent investigation into the hiring and training of drivers. it comes in the wake of four complaints of sexual asult ainst metro access drivers. the company subcontracts with metro to operate the door-to-door service for disabled who are unable to use buses or rail service. mv transportation already conducts background checks and operates a 110-hour training pgram for new employees. now to the latest on the breaking news we've been following all morning. the breaking news is about that accident involving an suv and an ambulance in prince george's county. three men were killed when the vehicles collided, and the suv went out of control. this all happened in the 5600 block of marlboro pike and megan mcgrath, as we said, is there live. let's see if we have her microphone back. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morng, joe. i think we fixed the problem.

you can seehe ambulance that was involved in this violent crash. heavily damaged. this happened just after midnight. the ambulance had just left the fire station. they had their lights and sirens on. they were on their way to pick up a patient. they were traveling westbound on marlboro pike when off in the distance they saw the head lights of another vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the roadway. so they were set up for a head-on collision at that point. according to investigators, the driver of the ambulance swerved to avo colliding head-on with the suv. in doing so the suv side-swiped the ambulance and literally ripped open the patient compartment of the ambulance. fortunately there wasno one in the rear compartment because they had not yet picked up their patient. >> the right-hand de of that ambulance is totally obliterated. the passenger, the patient

compartment area, that whole wa is removed and exposed to the exterior. the suv traveled about another 120 feet, striking a brick wall, a utility pole before coming to rest on itsroof. arriving firefighters and paramedics determined that the three adult males inside that suv were deceased. >> so three people in the suv are dead. it's unclear whether alcohol played a factor in this crash in th incident here. now i should mention that all of this was caught on videotape. the ambulance actually had a camera mounted on the dashboard. and so investigators were able to look at that type and piece together exactly wat happened. we're told from a fire spokesperson that by looking at that tape you can see just how fast this v was traveling. again, down the wrong side of the roadway, just prior to this collision. so they really didn't have a whole lot of time to react here. but they were able to avoid that head-on collion by the driver of the ambulance swerving out of the way. fortunately, nobody, though, was in the rear of that ambulance,

church, a divide that goes all the way back to hen very viii. you can see the hope's motorcade. they will have a meeting in just a few moments one would expect. >> police in fairfax county need your help finding a man who tri to rob a woman as she sat in her car in the middle of the afternoon. police say the victim was stopped at a red light at lee highway and merrilee drive last wednesday when a man two cars back got out, and demanded money. the light turned green and the woman drove away unharmed. here is a look at the suspect. police say he is a hispanic man about 25 years old, 5'10", he has short, black hair, a thick mustache, freckles and a gap between his two front teeth. a psible break this morning in a string of robberies near the university of maryld. >> one man is in custody for one of the -- one of two robberies. one of a series -- but the

search continues for two other men. news 4's tracee wilkins joins us live in college park. good morning, tracee. >> good morning, joe. we've been talking about these robberies. it has been a shock to the folks who live in this community and the students who live off campus, as well. since the beginning of the school year, it appears that there have been robbers who believe that they can make money off of university of maryland students by robbing them in this area. surveillance deo helped to make one arrest. now police say they still have two other suspects who are running. prince george's county polic arrested 19-year-old jah of silver springs. police say he and two other students robbed a student on august 8th. now jah was arrested at his me. now this was one of five robberies that have happened here in college park, all within an eleven-day span. three of the robberies involved students. these all happened off campus. now these robberies are violent. and in some cases involved weapons. and police don't know if they

were all connected or not. but what they do know is that students need to be careful, and so do folks who live here in the college park area near the universit of maryland. police have posted signs like this one, talking about prime-time, saying that between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. people need to be planning thr walks, walking in groups or staying in if at all possible because most of these robberies have been happening in the early morning hours. tracee wilkins liv this morning in college park. >> okay, thanks, tracee. here is a story that might creep you out just a bit. students on two college campuses in north carolina are now being forced out of their dormitories this morning because of bed bugs. these blood-sucking parasites, that sounds like an inadult, doesn't it? they were found in dorms at wake forest university, and now students are being moved out so the schools can move in and spray for pests and clean all the ds. this outbreak is the latest in what appears to be a bed bug

arlington national cemetery is the final resting place for those who died in iraq. private first class heath warner was buried here in 2006. four years later his family is at arlington to make sure their son was in the right plot. >> he's so missed and our family, even after going on four years, this transition from being a family of five to four, we still don't have our arms around it. >> reporter: the warners say they got worried in the wake of the arlington cemetery scandal that broke in june. investigators found over 200 graves that were unmarked or mislabeled. arlington officials exhumed the marine's body. and the warners were able to identify their son by his distinct tattoos. >> it's a japanese kanji and it means kill evil instantly. heath was a freedom fighter. and it was in his heart. he had a greater love for
